What in the hell is going on?!

Hey, folks!

Most recently I was approached to write a video game called Rack n Ruin. Check out the Kickstarter campaign right here. The short version: I’ll be writing the story of an evil demon-wizard who is on a mission to corrupt and/or sometimes destroy worlds! This will prove to be a huge stretch for me. And, if you’re the kind of person who’s reading these words, odds are you’re also the kind of person who likes it when I stretch that way.

That got a little weird, right?

Meanwhile I’m around the 20% complete mark on Benjamin Hu and the Pharaoh of Hong Kong novel. It’s going slower than I’d hoped, but for reasons I can’t complain about. Namely: I keep getting hired to write other stuff too! On that note look for my name attached to a few short Spider-Man comics later this Fall. With those out of the way though it’s back to writing Ben and outlining future Atomic Robo endeavors. My hope is I’ll be able to convince myself it’s okay to take the time to get back into writing The Traitor and the Monk (and more!) when I break 50% on Ben. Basically the novel is the largest single project I’ve had to do in years and I want to do right by it.

On the bright side it’s been super fun! The Spirit of the Century setting is right up my alley and it’s a real honor to be a part of it. Like, I’m actually really excited every time I sit down to hack away at it. You don’t always get to feel like that about freelance, so you cherish it when it happens. Hell, I’m enjoying the work so much it’s even got me excited about writing more novels for the first time in, y’know, ten years.

What is funny, is that this morning I was reading a forum and the discussion was about how authors have difficulty writing entertaining and engaging evil characters. The only example people could provide as to how an evil character should be written was Black Mage. So seeing that you are being asked to write an evil wizard character seems like like a perfect match.

      Ha.

I think that’s a bit limiting though. Black Mage was super fun to write, and hopefully to read, but there’s a whole range of bad guy types nothing like him that’d be entertaining too.

I suspect we tend not to see them largely due to corporate cowardice. Corporate properties are inevitably going to go through the wringer of a marketing committee calling the shots and those groups are only as smart as the dumbest least imaginative guy in the room.

    AWESOME! Go get it, Brian!

It is seriously the coolest that you seem to have more -offers- for writing jobs than you can even take on singlehandedly.  Way to go, livin’ the dream!

Loveh the way you write, backing your game. All the best

Can’t wait to read each and every one of these projects. :)

Anyone who says its hard to write evil has never read a V:TM roleplay forum.

I think the lamentation was that it was hard to write evil well.

OHHHHHHHH SNAP TAKE THAT VAMPIRE RPG FORUM DAAAAAYUM

Writing evil elegantly is difficult. LARPing evil elegantly is impossible, but it’s also glorious, glorious comedy gold.

Dark Lord of Denny’s ATTACK! xD

Looks like the Rack n’ Ruin kickstarter didn’t make it. Bummer guys. But a good effort nonetheless. Are the devs going to scrap the idea, or did they get enough market feedback to make promising changes?

      I don’t knoooooooow!
